Multi-fiber Cable & Data Center

The continuous expansion of data center drives the continuous growth of bandwidth demand and the change of network architecture. Although the information required may come from different sources, such as external customers supporting their basic cloud service operations, or internal business departments of traditional data centers, the requirements are the same, which is to provide fast services and responses. Large scale network must be able to deploy quickly, manage effectively and put into production in a very short time.

In the data center, the traditional structured cabling is based on the pre-terminated MTP backbone cable (from 12 cores to 144 cores) system. In order to support the demand of bandwidth growth or the change of technical architecture, the fiber cores is also increasing. In order to meet the needs of connection in high-density areas, the cores of an optical cable can reach 864, or even up to 1728 in some cases.

Due to the evolution of the data center environment, the cabling structure must also be changed to meet the needs of the data center. As shown in below Figure, the connection between the computer room of data center and the campus network is defined as a data center.

Design elements

When designing fiber optical cabling for data center, many factors need to be considered, including network architecture, planned area, production area, etc. The cabling structure is designed and deployed according to the network structure. For example, in most cases, the data center adopts the network architecture of TOR switch. One option is to deploy low core optical cables to the cabinet where each TOR switch is located. Another option is the optical cable can also be deployed in MOR or EOR mode and connected to the equipment cabinet. In this way, the optical fiber can be combined to improve the utilization efficiency of the cabinet space.

 

In many traditional data center, when the link requirement is more than 12 core fiber, multiple 12 core cables are combined to lay. Due to the continuous growth of the demand for optical fiber cores, the use of multiple low core optical cables will face the challenges of cable management. To address these challenges, many data center use 144 core MTP ® backbone cables. If the number of optical fiber link cores required for data center deployment is greater than 144 cores, multiple 144 core MTP ® backbone optical cables shall be installed to meet the requirements. For example, if a link requires 288 fibers, install it using a combination of two 144 MTP ® cables. High core optical cable installation can greatly reduce the deployment time of data center cabling.  


 

Of course, due to the diversity of scenarios and requirements of data center fiber cabling, the deployment scheme is also diversified. Specific problems need to be analyzed in detail. Please consult JFOPT sales team once you have any question.
